Wired Weekly with Leccylee - Issue 1
NICEIC’s Spring 2025 Webinar Series:
If you’re serious about staying sharp in the trade, you’ll want to catch this — the NICEIC has just kicked off its Spring 2025 series of The Wire, and it’s shaping up to be one of their best yet. I always tell my trainees and fellow electricians: never stop learning. These CPD-accredited sessions are free, on-point, and built to help you stay bang up to date with real-world topics we all deal with.
What’s on the schedule?
The new series includes five solid sessions, starting May 8th. They’re tackling issues you’ll recognise from site work, assessments, and the kind of things we get asked in class all the time. Here’s a quick look at what they’re covering:
-
Common questions from the NICEIC technical helpline — always good to know what’s catching people out
-
A detailed update on BS 5839-1:2025 and fire systems — a must if you work in commercial installs
-
A breakdown of heat pump fundamentals — with renewables growing, you need this
-
The latest on Solar PV systems — again, more important every day
-
And a fun one: Myth busters — NICEIC style — useful, and probably a few laughs too
Why I recommend it
Last time round, over 16,000 of us tuned in — for good reason. Five hours of CPD, clear info, and practical takeaways. Whether you’re on the tools full-time or training the next generation (like I do), this stuff matters. Knowing the regs is one thing. Applying them in the real world? That’s what separates a spark from a standout spark.
Keep an eye on the schedule and make time for these. It’s not just theory — it’s the stuff that makes you better at your job.

JTL Hull ‘Trade Talks’: Worth a Visit if You’re Local
If you’re anywhere near Hull — or fancy a decent road trip with a few mates from the trade — the JTL team is putting on a cracking open event on May 22nd. It’s part of their new Trade Talks series, aimed at giving local installers, learners, and employers a proper chance to connect, learn, and see what’s new across electrical and plumbing.
What’s happening on the day?
Expect a relaxed but informative vibe. You’ll get to speak directly with the JTL team, check out the newest kit from local wholesalers and big brands, and grab some food and drink while you’re at it. Plus, there’ll be industry reps on site giving real-world advice — not just brochures and sales chat.
It’s a solid chance to ask about apprenticeships (whether you’re thinking of hiring or becoming one), get to grips with training options, or just expand your network a bit. These face-to-face events don’t happen often enough — and when they do, they’re golden for getting clear answers and making connections that help your career.
Why events like this matter
As someone who works with apprentices every day, I can tell you that getting in front of the right people — the ones who understand both the regs and the real-life side of the trade — makes a huge difference. Whether you’re looking to grow your business, start your journey, or just stay current, these events give you a real edge.
And yes — free parking, food, and a few decent chats with other sparkies never hurt either.

New Kit: Unicrimp Adds Stainless Steel Ties to Q-Fire Range
Here’s one for the kit-heads — Unicrimp (part of the Scolmore Group) has just expanded its Q-Fire range with new stainless steel cable ties. If you’re working on fire-rated installs or anywhere that demands top-notch fixings, this one’s worth a look.
Why it matters on site
Let’s be honest: cable support in fire conditions is something we all need to take more seriously. These stainless steel ties aren’t just about ticking the box — they help prevent premature cable collapse, which can be the difference between life and death in an emergency. Whether it’s for a public building, a commercial riser, or just staying compliant, it’s one of those upgrades that makes sense.
The expanded sizes — 200mm, 300mm, and 360mm all at 4.6mm wide — give you more flexibility when securing bundles in tough spots. I’ve seen too many jobs where someone used standard ties where fire-rated should’ve been the go-to. If it’s a safety-critical area, do it once and do it right.
My take as a tutor and installer
I show these types of products in training for a reason — they reinforce best practice, not just minimum spec. Trainees take it in when they can see the “why,” and gear like this tells that story. If you’re quoting a job with fire safety in mind, adding proper containment and support like these ties can make your bid stand out for all the right reasons.
Simple bit of kit, but important. Worth stocking a few sizes for when that next serious install comes through.
News from Leccylee
I’ll wrap up this issue of Wired Weekly with a quick update from my side — what I’ve been working on and what’s coming your way very soon.
More Practice Exams Coming
This week, I’ll be uploading more BS 7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations practice exams. If you’re preparing for your exam, these new sets will give you even more questions to help reinforce your knowledge and boost your confidence.
I’m also working on practice exams for Inspection and Testing qualifications, including City & Guilds 2391 and other industry equivalents. These will be ideal for brushing up ahead of assessment day.
New Course Launching Soon
Behind the scenes, I’ve been finalising my brand new online course for the BS 7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. It’s almost ready and should be available to new candidates in the coming weeks.
The course will feature video lessons with me, walking you through the key chapters of the regs, explaining what they really mean, and helping you truly understand the material — not just memorise it. You’ll also get access to practice questions, exam tips, and learning strategies.
It’s designed to feel just like attending one of my 3-day classroom-based courses — but online, on-demand, and at an affordable price.
Stay tuned, and make sure you’re signed up for email updates on the website so you don’t miss the launch.
BS 7671 Video Series: “Part 2, Definitions”
Want to get to grips with the key terms used in the regs? I’ve just kicked off a new video series over on my YouTube channel and socials, where I break down and explain the essential terminology from Part 2: Definitions of BS 7671.
It’s simple, clear, and designed for both learners and working sparkies who want to keep their knowledge sharp.
